Falling into Winter

Seeing the snow falling today reminds us that fall is dwindling and another season is upon us.  Halloween pieces are long-finished and the practising of Christmas pieces has begun.  It's time to look ahead to our winter recital!  A studio newsletter will be going home with students this week, and in summary...we are going to have our recital in January instead of December this year.  December is such a busy month, for all of us, and January can be so dull and empty, that we thought we'd try something new this year.  We still plan to visit Light Haven retirement home in Bruce Mines and play for the residents, but haven't worked out an exact date yet.  Check in again soon for a date, time and other details.

Oh, and a photo to make you smile:
Piano student Tait Moss delighted Hannah-Lee by showing up for his Halloween week lesson wearing a moustache!

Spring 2013 at the Loft

We've ended our 2012-2013 school year at Lessons in the Loft by celebrating with another great recital.
Lessons in the Loft students and teachers, June 9th, 2013
We were proud of the students for giving such composed, expressive performances It has been fun observing the musical development of everyone through the months and years.

Helen's exam warm-up session
Alyssa's exam warm-up session
The Thursday after the recital, Alyssa and Helen took their first Royal Conservatory exams.  During the 2012-2013 school year both students practiced and worked very hard with Hannah-Lee in preparation for the Grade One requirements.  It will be a few weeks before the results are posted, but both girls felt that they had a good experience, played well, and remembered their technique (all those scales and triads)!  We'll keep you posted.

In April, eight of our piano students participated in the Sault Ste Marie Music Festival.  All of them gave successful performances, had the opportunity to hear other students play and to interact with the adjudicator who worked with each of them individually on their strengths and weaknesses.

In March, we were excited to have three guitar students join our roster and Eric began stepping them through acoustic guitar basics.  Benjamin, Colby and Aidan are progressing well and we look forward to future performances from them.

Thanks to all students, parents and grandparents for such a rewarding year.  Have a fun, safe, happy summer!  Lessons will start again in September, the second week of school.  We are looking forward to it.

Winter Happenings in the Loft

It is time for an update.  A very wintry February has arrived, and you've all been slogging down our LONG road for lessons in 2013.  I hope you know how much I appreciate your (and your parents') efforts to make it to your lessons.

Recent Lessons in the Loft Happenings:

December:  Our recital at Lighthaven Retirement Home in Bruce Mines.  Thank you students for your admirable performances.  I know that the old piano was a challenge to orient yourselves to, but you played beautifully and brought smiles and joy to the residents.  What a great Christmas gift for them!

Olivia Lawrence, 1998 to 2013
January:  Sadly, one of our lovely kitties and mascot, Olivia, passed away.  It was a very difficult time for us.  Thank you for your kind words and sympathy following our loss.  Our other little feline, Ophelia, will still be happy to greet you when you come for lessons - if she's not napping in some secret location.  FYI, if you check out our business card, Olivia is the cat lounging on the top left corner.

February:  It's time to start thinking ahead to the Sault Ste Marie Music Festival (formerly Kiwanis Music Festival).  Do you want to participate this year?  In the next couple of weeks we'll be discussing this at your lesson and filling out registration forms.  The dates for the 2013 piano segment of the festival are April 7 - 11.

Happy (Belated) New Year everyone!  We are looking forward to some great music-making in the loft this winter and spring.
